Stephen Andrews Final Project

From vjmedia

Hi! My name is Stephen Andrews and this page described my final project for MU 2300.

Background

Prior to taking this class I had no previous experience making any type of music. When I was younger I practiced piano, but haven’t played in recent years. I listen to a lot of music, most of which is Hip Hop/R&B. I’ve been interested in being able to make these types of beats on my own, but had no idea where to start. This class has been fantastic as it has shown that the basic principle of making music through software is relatively simple, yet difficult to master.

Over the course of the four lab assignments, I’ve attempted to learn more about the beat making process. As previously mentioned, this is the first time I’ve used any sort of DAW. Since we were initially introduced to Garage Band, I have been using that to complete the assignments. For my final project I wanted to move away from Garage Band and learn how to use FL Studio. The reason for this is that most Hip Hop producers work with FL Studio and as a result there are many tutorials online on how to create these types of beats.

I haven’t been satisfied with any of my previous work in this class and am hoping to remedy that with this final project. One of the aspects of beat creation I struggle with is how to carry on a full length song after the initial beat without repeatedly looping a melody. I hope to overcome that challenge with this final project.

Final Project Description

For my final project I will be creating a full length Lo-Fi Hip Hop song using FL Studio. I will be focusing on learning how to properly sample and create a cohesive piece with proper mixing.

Skills already known

Basically none. Only what I have learned thus far in this class.

Yet to Learn

• How to use FL Studio

• Sampling

• Proper mixing

I have been mainly learning how to use FL Studio through YouTube videos and just playing around with the software. One series I have been particularly drawn to is the deconstructed series by Genius which documents how a variety of producers made their beats.

Deliverable

MP3 and a Power Point reflecting the steps I took to create the MP3 and documenting the learning process.
