Plant Vibes

FMT Final Project- Kyra Robinson

For this project, I intended to compose a song that is meant to promote plant growth, however, the intended audience for this project is not just plants. Primarily, this idea was sprung because one of my roommates has absolutely filled our room with plants in a short 6 weeks. She absolutely dotes on them, so I thought I’d develop something that may help her plants thrive. I attempted to compose a piece that would theoretically be pleasing to plants and humans’ ears. Research has been done to indicate that plants thrive most when exposed to frequencies between 115 Hz and 250 Hz and over 500 Hz and that there are even certain sounds that can cause their stomata to remain open longer for better air intake. I composed this song in Ableton Live with these frequencies and classical/ jazz music in mind, as studies show these genres create the happiest plants. It was a scientifically informed composition. The challenge here was that I had to take my existing knowledge of music and apply research to it, as well as familiarize myself with electronic synthesis and transformative effects, as before this class I had no experience.
