Final Project - Gavin Lee
This is my final project for MU 2300.
For this project I created an orchestral piece for my Dungeons and Dragons game. What I normally do for the music I play at the table is I create playlists of music for various moods, locations, and events from a variety of movie and video game soundtracks as well as other composers. Occasionally for important events in my game I will attempt to find a piece that goes well with a specific narrative moment that I am almost certain will come up during a session. While I have found tracks that come close for one such event, none seemed to encapsulate the mood or intensity of the mood that I’d like perfectly. As such, I decided to try and make something of my own. What I ended up creating would hopefully accompany the segment of my game that I have in mind. The piece attempts to encompass an oppressive mood as well as a somber mood given how the players and whatever followers they gather will be going up against near impossible odds that could result in some of the followers (and maybe one of the players if things go really badly) dying.
The two most difficult parts of this project were actually translating what was in my head into the DAW and trying to make the piece sound realistic. I don't have much musical experience and composed this based on what I thought sounded good. As I created this in FL Studio on my laptop without any decent plugins like those available in the lab, it is difficult to make the instruments used sound "real," and while I think I've done the best I can with what I had and am satisfied with the composition, I wouldn't mind returning to it and updating it if I ever got better plugins.
