For this final project as part of my Foundation of Music Technology course, I have composed an instrumental cover of the song "Lady by the Sea" by Stephen Sanchez which features instruments such as the oboe played by me, ukulele played by my younger sister, drums played by my father, and electric guitar played by my uncle.
To execute this project, I first wrote the music for the main melody of the song. I then worked with my father and sister to record the drums and ukulele, and added a recording of myself playing the melody. I sent the audio file to my uncle so he could record improvised electric guitar. I then refined the layered recordings to produce the final recording.
This project is a representation of how music can connect people and is a universal language. My uncle lives in Brazil, does not speak English very well, and has bipolar disorder. Since COVID, it has been very difficult to reconnect with him whether it be by traveling to Brazil, or even calling him. But, music has always been a part of his and my life as well as the rest of my family which has helped keep all of us connected.
