The Renewable Energy Foundation (REF), a think tank critical of the wind power industry, has estimated that consumers currently pay more than £1 billion a year in subsidies, and this is expected to rise to £6 billion a year by 2020 to meet targets for providing 30 per cent of electricity through green energy.
