I remember the summer of my GCSEs, taking a day off from revision to go swimming with my travelling friends. One looked at me and said, 'Why are you so white?’ I glanced at the other girls, slim and brown from working outdoors all summer, and at myself: pale from days sat inside poring over textbooks. My determination had made me a recluse.
