In the original version, Tonto was the sidekick; here he takes centre stage, prompting jokes that the movie should be renamed &ldquo;Tonto&rsquo;s Pal&rdquo;. &ldquo;This is the story that could not have been told when the radio or television show came out,&rdquo; says Justin Haythe, one of the co-writers. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a very emotional story for Tonto &ndash; with all the absurdity and the fun that you expect from a Johnny Depp invention. The biggest challenge was recreating the myth of the Lone Ranger while making sure it was Tonto&rsquo;s story.&rdquo; Much of it is Depp&rsquo;s own vision, Bruckheimer tells me later.
