For the final project, I decided to do an acoustic cover of the song "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men. I recruited the help of one of my friends who is a very talented guitar player and arranged, recorded and edited the piece. I recorded my friend playing the many different guitar tracks, as well as, the vocals and the percussion part which I did, using the Shure SM58 dynamic microphone provided in the classroom. I recorded it into Ableton Live with the Avid M-Audio C400 Fast Track recording interface. I then edited the piece using Ableton and Garageband. I added lots of effects to the tracks such as EQ-Eight, Compressor, Chorus, Reverb, and Overdrive. I add EQ to boost certain parts of the recorded sound, compressor to even out some of the loud parts of the recording, chorus to smooth out some of the inflections in the vocals, and overdrive to make the percussion elements sound more interesting.
During this project, I learned how to record vocals and how to edit them to make them sound better. I learned how to smooth out vocal inflections or problems and make the quality sound less raw. I also learned how to record and edit live instrument sounds. I learned how to make the live instruments sound larger and give depth using reverb. I also learned how to use the panning of sounds to make the piece more interesting by putting different sounds in different places throughout the piece. This taught me how to give the piece more balance.
