What you intend to do
I plan to arrange the song “The Rains of Castamere” from Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire for a piano quartet (a piano, a violin, a viola, and a cello). The technical component will be putting my arrangement into Ableton Live to produce a recording of the four parts together. Since I don’t have access to any of the actual instruments, I’ll have to use Ableton samples to generate the sounds.

What skills you already know
On the technical side of things, I’ve used Ableton Live 10 a bit before. On the non-technical side, I have a strong background in music theory and classical music, so I have some idea of what a multi-instrument arrangement should look like. I’ve played the piano for a long time, so arranging for that shouldn’t be a problem. And I’m an amateur violinist, so I have an idea of the range of sounds a bowed instrument can produce, from plucked strings to bowings of varying lengths.

What skills you have yet to learn as well as how you plan to learn them
I need to learn how to effectively arrange a song for a viola and a cello in conjunction with a piano and a violin. I don’t know much about viola, aside from it sounding deeper than a violin and being the maligned instrument of the string section. And cello sounds cool, but I’ve never used one. Basically, I’ll need to learn some arranging and orchestration skills.

Also, I need to find a music notation software that allows me to write multiple instrument parts and export a finished score. Noteflight’s free version isn’t particularly friendly to multi-instrument arrangements.

Technical skills I need to learn include more on how to use Ableton Live for multi-instrument tracks effectively.

What the deliverable will be

  1. A recording of a MIDI piano quartet playing my arrangement of “The Rains of Castamere.”
  2. The actual score of “The Rains of Castamere” for piano, violin, viola, and cello.

Audience
Game of Thrones fans and people who are curious about chamber music arrangements of existing songs.
