I have made an extremely simple step sequencer that features a few different instruments such as a Saw Tooth Synthesizer, a drum loop, as well as two customizable instruments. Basically this Max patch allows a user to create a 16 beat loop that can be played back and modified in real time.

Foor the drum loop at the bottom of the UI, you can create a beat by simply click on the matrix. You have 5 rows and 16 columns to create a unique beat. Try to make a 16 beat loop.

Let’s move onto the other instruments. These all work similarly: There are 24 different pitches on these three matrices, lower notes are on top. You can select different pitches on the 16 beats to make another unique loop. Try different combinations of the three to make different sounds.

If you make a sequence that you like, you can save it by pressing shift + clicking on one of the presets in the box above the instrument. To clear that sequence from the preset storage, click clear selected preset.

For the custom instruments, you can change the sound by sliding the bar in the slider next to the volume. The black dials change the duration of each note. I have also added a toggle to increase the octave for the custom instruments.

You can change the temp of your song by spinning the dial at the top of the UI.

I did not get a chance to add a feature where you could loop through all of your presets to make the sequence longer which would make the song even more customizable and interesting. I also wanted to add a feature to record your sequence and save it to your machine. The Max patch is available for download on Manzo’s wiki page. Thanks for your interest and I hope you enjoyed my project!
