Hi guys, I made an album using Ableton Live using the MIDI format. This is an EDM album with six tracks. The first two were heavily inspired by Aphex Twin, the third is more dubstep and the last three I tried to go for a house music vibe. I hope you enjoy it.

=Overview=
Music Discovery is a full-stack music recommendation web application using Next.js, React, and TypeScript. The application allows users to search for a song, select it, and receive recommendations based on audio features such as energy, danceability, valence, BPM, key, mode, and genre. I implemented the search and recommendation functionality through API routes so that the large song dataset remains on the server rather than being loaded into the client. I also integrated the iTunes Search API to retrieve album artwork and audio preview clips for songs displayed in the application.

For the recommendation system, I created a similarity algorithm that compares the selected song against songs in the dataset and assigns each song a similarity score based on the differences between their audio features. Songs with the lowest scores are considered the most similar and are returned as recommendations. I also created a reusable Song TypeScript type to define the properties shared across the dataset and application.

The project uses a large Spotify song dataset that was converted from CSV to JSON and processed to remove duplicate songs. The primary resources for continuing development are the project GitHub repository, the dataset files in src/data, the recommendation logic in src/lib/recommend.ts, and the API routes in src/app/api. Future work should focus on improving the quality and diversity of the dataset, particularly reducing irrelevant/non-English songs and improving coverage of newer music and genres such as hip-hop and rap. Additionally, not all songs consistently return album artwork or audio previews from the iTunes API, so improving the reliability of these results or finding an alternative source for missing artwork and previews would be useful. Finally, it would be great if the application had some sort of explanation to the user as to why the recommendation results were recommended.

My name is Shae, and I created an original song that uses midi input, loops, and a voicebank. To do this, I used Ableton, OpenUtau, a voicebank from the internet, sounds and effects supplied by my trial version of Ableton, and my piano keyboard (and/or Musescore). I already understood: music theory, Ableton's features, anatomy of a typical song, masking, MIDI sequencing, notation. I had to learn how to use OpenUtau's software and how to automate. To learn these things, I relied on course material, YouTube tutorials, online posts, and my own experimentation. The final product, an audio recording, is intended to appeal toward fans of Vocaloid-esque music.

For my project, I remixed "Them Changes" by Thundercat using Ableton Live. I began by importing the original song into Ableton and analyzing its overall structure. I used the original track as a guide while creating my own sections with MIDI instruments, samples and audio effects instead of simply editing the original audio.

To recreate the song, I programmed the bass line, chords, and melodic elements using Ableton's built-in instruments. I adjusted synthesizer settings, including oscillators, filters and effects to produce sounds that matched the character of the original while still giving the remix its own character. I also programmed drum patterns using drum racks, creating a groove inspired by the original song but more electronic.

I then used MIDI editing to change the note timing, velocity, and expression. I layered instruments to create a fuller sound and applied effects such as EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and saturation to improve the mix.

Finally, I balanced all of the tracks through mixing by adjusting levels. I learned a lot of from this project, including MIDI programming, sound design, audio effects, arrangement, mixing, and creating an original interpretation of an existing song.
